Geotextile is a dense woven fabric made of polypropylene granules and UV stabilizer TOSAF. Polypropylene woven geotextile has a high tensile strength, resistance to UV radiation, weather impact, and chemicals. This material does not rot in constant contact with water and does not emit toxic substances when heated, which makes it safe for the environment and human health.
Covering geotextile, used when growing plants in the open air or in the greenhouse, performs many important functions:
- it protects plants from weeds (due to its dense structure mulch geotextile does not let the sunlight in, weakens the process of photosynthesis, thus, preventing the germination of weeds);
- reduces the need to apply herbicides (geotextile mulching hinders the growth of weeds in the garden, thus reducing the time of plant care, eliminating the need to weed beds and the use of weed killers);
- it lets moisture and air penetrate well to the roots of plants (the lined geotextile reduces water evaporation from the ground and keeps the soil moist even in dry weather, providing a favorable microclimate for intensive development of the root system of plants);
- improves soil temperature regime (geotextile for mulching contributes to quick soil warming in spring);
- protects plants from fluctuations in daytime and night-time temperatures;
- prevents the formation of mold and rot under the coating;
- facilitates easy removal of leaves and debris;
- Keeps vegetables and berries clean (geotextile for strawberries, laid between the beds, eliminates splashing of soil when watering crops, as a result of which the fruits retain their beautiful commercial appearance).
Geotextile fabric, which with its “cellular” texture resembles polypropylene bags for sugar or flour, is more durable than non-woven black agrofibre. When the geotextile covers the row spacing it is safe to walk on it, drag pots with seedlings or containers for picking berries without the risk of damaging the fabric. Due to high strength characteristics, strawberry agrofabric has a long service life (when properly used – up to 5 seasons), which is very convenient and cost-effective in the cultivation of perennial ornamental crops, shrubs and fruit trees.
Geotextile is widely used in horticulture and landscape design. The mulching geotextile is used for soil mulching, for bedding between the rows of strawberries, blueberries and other berry crops. It is also used in landscaping to create flowerbeds and rockeries for planting thus and other decorative coniferous plants, for landscaping by paving slabs or paving stones. And in nurseries and garden centers such landscape fabric serves to cover the ground area in order to prevent the plants’ roots from sprouting into the ground through the drainage holes in the pots.
